While that's a far cry from Capcom's announcement that the 2023 Capcom Pro Tour will have a cool $2 million for its prize pool, with $1 million going to the winner, it's a huge step up for fighting games, which have traditionally offered low prize pools, even at premier events. The other big news from that broadcast was that EVO will establish a $25,000 minimum prize pool for every game in its lineup. EVO 2023 may also mark the last year of Tekken 7's run, depending on when Tekken 8 releases. MK11's return to the main stage could signal that NetherRealm might have something to announce, but we'll have to wait and see.

The only surprise is the return of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.ĭeveloper NetherRealm discontinued DLC and update support for the game in 2021 to move on to new projects. In fact, the entire franchise has always made a habit of not taking itself too seriously. Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Adds Unique New Content To The Base Gameīut odd characters such as RoboCop are no stranger to the Mortal Kombat series. To aid in this endeavor, the two are somewhat coerced into a reluctant partnership with Shang Tsung.
As one would expect, Aftermath takes place directly after the events of MK11's base story, and follows the newly-crowned fire god Liu Kang as he and Raiden attempt to rewrite their timeline after their conflict with the time goddess, Kronika. NetherRealm's cinematic approach to storytelling necessitates a cinematic expansion to its story. For instance, Street Fighter 3: New Generation's storyline is predominantly different than Street Fighter 3: Third Strike's story, despite them both being SF3 games, as well as having their stories told via arcade endings. In general, fighting game re-releases do expand upon the original's storyline, but never in such a cinematic way.
